If you own a home in Studio City with an aging AC, the question is usually what a new one will cost and when to do it. AC installation cost depends on the house, the equipment and the ducts, so there is no flat number worth quoting. This page shows what moves the price and why the quiet months are the right time to plan.
Studio AC Co. sizes every system by load calculation and puts the quote in writing before work starts.
Why spring is the time to replace
An AC that fails in the first heat wave puts you in a rush. You take what is on the truck, you wait for the next open slot, and you decide about sizing in a hot living room.
Plan in the cooler months and the job runs differently:
- - You have time to compare a repair against a replacement
- The survey and the load calculation happen without pressure
- You choose the equipment, not whatever is in stock
- The permit and the install date line up with your schedule
Our AC installation crews can start with a survey now and hold the install until you are ready. If your unit still runs, you lose nothing by getting the plan on paper first.
What sets the price
Five things move the number most:
- - Capacity of the system, set by the load calculation, not the old unit
- Efficiency rating, shown as SEER2 on current equipment
- Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed operation
- What happens at the indoor coil, the line set and the pad
- Scope beyond the equipment: ducts, electrical, thermostat and permit
Since 1 Jan 2025, new residential split AC and heat pump systems are made with lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. That is part of the equipment you buy today, and your quote names the refrigerant.
If a ductless system suits the house better, the figures are different. Single-zone systems start around $3,600 installed for a 12,000 BTU indoor head and outdoor compressor. Multi-zone setups, two to four indoor heads sharing one outdoor unit, run $12,000 to $24,000 depending on total capacity and refrigerant line lengths. See ductless mini split for how those jobs go.
For a central system, the price is set after the survey. We do not print a guess, because the same house can land in very different places depending on the ducts and the panel.
Valley heat and sizing
Studio City sits in the San Fernando Valley, and the Valley holds heat. Homes south of Ventura Boulevard are often single-story with attic ducts. Homes up the hills have different roof exposure and longer runs.
Sizing is where cost and comfort meet. An undersized AC runs without catching up. An oversized one cools fast, shuts off and leaves the room clammy and uneven. Both cost you money.
The load calculation looks at the whole house room by room:
- - Floor area and ceiling height
- Window size, direction and shading
- Insulation in the attic and walls
- Duct losses
- How the house is used, including rooms that run hot
That number, not the old nameplate, sets the tonnage. Sometimes the answer is smaller than what you have now. Sometimes it is larger.
Ducts and electrical
The equipment is half the job. A new AC on tired ducts will not deliver what it should.
Ducts get checked at the survey. Leaks, crushed runs and undersized trunks all show up in how the system performs. Title 24 Part 6, California's energy standard, can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test on a change-out or duct work, depending on the scope. The test is verified by a third-party HERS rater who is not the installer. Our ductwork services cover repair and replacement when the ducts need it.
Electrical is the other line item people miss. The new condenser needs the right breaker, wire size and disconnect. Older panels sometimes need work before the new unit can run. Your electric service in Studio City comes from LADWP, and the quote tells you if anything on the electrical side needs attention.
Replacing an AC is permitted work. In Studio City the permit comes from LADBS, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, and we arrange it with the inspection.
Written quote
The written quote is the last step before you commit. It states:
- - The equipment model, capacity and efficiency rating
- The refrigerant type
- The duct and electrical work included
- The permit and inspection
- The total price
You read it, ask questions, compare it with anything else on your desk, and decide. Nothing starts until you say so.
FAQ
How much does AC installation cost in Studio City?
It depends on the system size, the equipment tier, the condition of the ducts and the electrical work needed. Ductless single-zone systems start around $3,600 installed for a 12,000 BTU indoor head and outdoor compressor. For central AC, the price is fixed in writing after the survey.
Should I repair or replace my AC?
If the repair is small and the system is sound, repair it. If the compressor is locked or the windings are open, replacement of that part costs $1,400 to $3,600 for the part and labor, which is often more than half the price of a new unit. Our AC repair techs will tell you plainly which side you are on.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. AC replacement is permitted work in California, and LADBS issues it for Studio City.
Will I need new ducts?
Not always. The survey checks the ducts, and you see the result before you decide. Depending on the scope, Title 24 can require sealing and a leakage test.
Can I get a quote before summer?
Yes, and that is the point of this page. Ask now, get the plan in writing, and book the install when it suits you.
